Full Auto Crossbow

I'd expect the BATF gestapo to be smashing down his front door with a no-knock warrant just about any time now for building a fully automatic weapon without proper NFA registration. That would sound more like a joke if it weren't for cases like the Akins Accelerator where the BATF initially approves a device by Technical Branch acceptance letter, and then completely backtracks on the decision, destroying the livelihood of the inventor in the process (Oh, did you hear that Akins' appeal was denied earlier this year?). If I made something like this, I sure as hell wouldn't plaster videos of it on the internet, regardless of how obvious it is that it isn't a firearm (and not really all that deadly).

Impressive homemade engineering, in any case:

You underestimate the power of a crossbow, they're more powerful than compound bows, and an bolt will go right through you pretty much with a good broadhead.

Yeah, there's a reason that there was a papal edict in Medieval Europe that forbade the use of crossbows against Christians.

Something tells me this particular crossbow's poundage/power/velocity is significantly less than the vast majority of crossbows used for hunting/combat in order for that tiny electric motor to be able to easily cock it so easily. I would imagine that this particular crossbow might have some trouble penetrating a heavy coat, much less any sort of real armor.

a look at his website (http://www.awhite.fsbusiness.co.uk/x_bows.html) shows draw weights to 100 pounds, though that one is about 20. I wouldn't stand in front of him.....

Considering how little difficult an arrow from my mid range compound bow has going through a deer I don't know that a crossbow is necessarily more powerful. Or that the additional power makes it any more effective. To have any meaningful discussion of relative power you probably need to define draw weights, lengths, arrow/bolt mass, and range. As those all make a difference in the kinetic energy and momentum at impact. I also suspect that momentum plays a bigger role in the terminal effect than kinetic energy, but I'll admit I'm not an expert on that front.

I love the fact that it's got a thumbhole stock. Doesn't that automatically make it NOT an assault weapon?

The BATFE cannot declare it a 'machine gun' because it's not a 'firearm'. See 26 USC Sec. 5845. It's complex enough, expensive enough, and unique enough that they probably won't bother with it. However, if other folks start making them, they could go to Congress and have them banned like ballistic knives.

Wow, I didn't know about that one- thanks for yet another reason to hate those bureaucratic SOBs. =\

Actually, I don't know if the BATFE had anything to do with that. People are so accustomed to demonizing the BATFE, DEA, FDA, and other regulatory organizations that they don't realize that Congresscritters are the real danger. Usually, the regulatory agencies will perceive something like this 'full auto crossbow' as a non-threatening novelty, while legislators will see it as an opportunity to create a public scare and introduce some bullshit legislation to ban 'assault crossbows'.

All crossbows are illegal in NYS :(

Gives me an idea for incorporating a cordless screwdriver mechanism to a cocking assist for regular hunting crossbows. You could cock or recock safely while in a treestand, for example, or in the cramped quarters of a blind.

If you're talking about a full-power crossbow, you're going to need something with more torque than the average cordless screwdriver.

This. I've fired full-power crossbows, and there's a foot loop for a very, very good reason: even sasquatches like me would have a tough time drawing them without it.

Papal Edict regarding the banning of crossbows!

Something has to be done to keep these dangerous sorcerers terrorists off of the streets with their black magic technology.

The minute people start cheating on laws, what do you think happens to society?

We can't have these unlawful dangerous terrorist geniuses out there making WMDs!
